Why do we always think there is a guidebook to everything in life?
A special log that holds all the secrets to our journey on this earth. A document created by the overlords maybe, or humans like us who have traveled our paths and logged their steps along the way.
The truth is, there are no fucking rules to anything. You create your own!
I cannot recall how many articles I have read that eloquently talks about how people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet achieved success, and how you can be just as prosperous by following their methods.
This is the biggest bullshit ever. Because if it were true, the upper class would be much bigger than 1%.
When we started our restaurant company in 2013, we had zero experience in the industry. Along the way we researched and read about how successful restauranteurs like Steve Ells of Chipotle and Howard Schultz of Starbucks built their mega brands. I followed up on the news regularly and observed how they handled finances, branding, customer service among other elements.
And at the end of the day, none of that shit helped us dig our company out of the rut. Simply due to the fact that there are no keys to success or failure, and their journey on this earth is totally different from mine. My life will not have the same highs and lows like Steve Ells and vice versa. I can do the total opposite of what he did and make it big, just as much as I can fail.
Of course, reading and gathering motivation from success stories that have been in your position before is good, but for inspirational purposes only. Not to necessarily follow as a map.
You have to create your own rules, your own mistakes, your own risks, your own triumphs, your own memories. You have to create your own guide. Do not think you have to be like someone else or do what they have done to be great. We all have our own paths to take, our own scripts to write, our own legacies to leave behind.
I saw this quote a few days back and it rings so true. George Bernard Shaw once said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
Go out and create!
Do you think there are any specific rules to success?
