I have really owned only one pair of sneakers for over a year.

A pair of Nike Air Max Tavas!

and they have accompanied me everywhere. From Santo Domingo (seen in cover photo)

To Pooler, Georgia

and to New York City Subways

Plus to weekends in Orlando, dozens of plane and road trips back and forth across the US, Thanksgiving dinner, work, Walmart, Aldi, shopping malls, parties, restaurants, I could go on forever.

I could have made the sacrifice and bought another pair or two multiple times, so why haven’t I done that?

Because, its not a need. There is a difference between a want and a need, which we often misconstrue to satiate our incessant hunger for material items. Do not get me wrong! I like clothes! I wanted to start a fashion line from my teens, but sometimes you realize that there are more important things in life than worrying about a “want.”

Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Facebook, has famously said that he wears the same grey T-shirt and blue jeans almost everywhere he goes, because its one less unimportant thing he has to focus on. Also, have you ever realized that many successful fashion designers only wear the same set of clothes everywhere they go, despite designing hundreds of clothing items for a living? Take a look at some photos of Olivier Rousteing, Creative Director of Balmain.

I have had only one sneaker for over a year because this Nike Air Max Tavas has been a trooper. It has taken me a countless number of places as you read above and it is still taking me on a new trek ever so often. It has not torn or become uncomfortable; and other than a few worn dirt marks and scratches, it is still an awesome pair of sneakers. Maybe the best I have ever had!

I have not lost any sleep or gone hungry because I have only one pair of Nikes.

Having a hundred pair of sneakers is not important, because its all material stuff. One day when I have a bigger disposable income, I might just splurge, but it will not be because I overvalue inanimate objects or see them as a need, its because I like them. Yes, there’s a difference! ๐Ÿ˜‰

For the moment, my personal needs are food, shelter, love, and growth; and I think I will stick with only those “needs” for a while.

What are your needs?

  1. I love it!! Great write. I just need love, and finally at 43 found that love in this man I call best friend and husband. One pair of shoes would be fine for a simple gal like me. Material items come, and go as fast as you pull your camera out for the shot of the rainbow. I have had to let go of many material items some could not. At the end of the day, or upon my death they will not make differance or matter. Really liked this, coolโœŒLisa

    1. Thanks for your feedback Lisa, and I appreciate the compliment. As I have grown older it has become more obvious to me that material things don’t make you happy, they only make you comfortable. I am glad to know you found love and sometimes that is all you need, material things come and go, a spiritual connection lasts forever. Please stop by anytime. One Love!
